Family School

Mentorship Program

Every other spring, fourth and fifth graders participate in the Mentorship Program. Each student is paired with an adult mentor to study an area of interest in-depth for six weeks. Mentors can be Family School teachers, parents, or members of the community. Mentors spend a minimum of six one-hour sessions with their student, usually at the mentor’s workplace. In the past, students worked with professionals such as a glassblower, gardener, horse trainer, cake baker/decorator, radio announcer, restaurant cook, and pre-school teacher. Students journal about their experience, and at the end of six weeks, they make a presentation for other students, parents, and mentors.

The purpose of the mentorship program is to let students begin to look at the world of possibilities beyond school.

The mentorship program alternates with Outdoor School.
